Our take on The Surrey

If walls could talk, The Surrey would have a lot to say about what it's seen from its location in Manhattan's Upper East Side, just a block from Fifth Avenue and Central Park. A recent $60-million renovation doesn't disguise the building's 1926 origin -- it only enhances it. Interior designer Lauren Rottet built layers of detail into a style that gives the hotel the look that it's evolved through the years. A marble lobby and crystal chandelier add to the stately ambiance. A private rooftop garden invites lingering, languishing and looking out at a sparkling cityscape. Romance gives way in guest rooms appointed with hand-painted wardrobes, triple-sheeted beds and a menu of pillow choices. Function keeps pace with fashion in a spacious work area with an ergonomic chair. Get lost in the whole Surrey experience in one of the rooms with a fireplace or outdoor terrace.

Insider Tips on the Best Rooms at this Hotel

Quiet Rooms

Rooms facing 76th Street are much quieter than the rooms on Madison Avenue.

Rooms with a View

Deluxe rooms facing south on the higher floors will have a view of Midtown, while Deluxe rooms facing north will have a view of Uptown. The Midtown view is a bit more appealing. There's a building between the hotel and Central Park, so the Central Park views may not be ideal. The hotel always fills the higher floors first, so you'll have a good chance of getting a room with a view if you book early.

Oversized Rooms

While there are no oversized standard rooms available, you may want to consider upgrading to a Grand Deluxe Salon for more square footage at just under $40 more.

Best Rooms

The hotel is surrounded by taller buildings, so you won't find any fantastic city views. Rooms overlooking 43rd St. have a bit more of an expansive view of the street, but rooms on the 44th St. side have a prettier view of the nearby hotels.
