Lightning Strikes the Cloud: How Room 77 Was Impacted and What We Are Doing About It

Like many modern web-based businesses, Room 77 relies on Web hosting and data services that are hosted “in the cloud.” Friday night at approximately 11 PM Eastern Daylight Time, Amazon’s East Coast “cloud” data center was knocked out by powerful electrical storms in the Washington, D.C. metro area. Numerous websites and mobile apps were knocked offline including Netflix, Pinterest, Instagram and Room 77. Our servers at Room 77 were restored on Saturday at approximately 7:30 PM EDT.

At Room 77, we take pride in providing a fast and reliable hotel search experience, and we know that this kind of a prolonged, unplanned outage is totally unacceptable. We are taking several measures to ensure that this does not happen again. For example, we will be investing in greater data center redundancy across geographical regions, improving monitoring and alert systems, and providing better customer support.

Thank you for your continued business and for using Room 77!
